In the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt) children and youth account for almost two thirds of the entire population. As young people offer a huge potential for the development of their countries, they play a crucial role for their societies. However, the situation of young Palestinians is strongly affected by the occupation as well as internal quarrels.
The territorial segregation and the political situation in the oPt strongly affect most aspects of young people’s daily living: their mobility, their opportunities for education and employment, their possibilities to claim and to exercise their rights and to participate in the society in political, economic, cultural or social terms. As such young people’s protection, provision and participation rights are being violated in various ways. In addition to these challenges, young people are faced with an “adult-centred traditional culture” where they are first and foremost supposed to listen to and to obey the elders and only seldom are allowed to speak up and voice their opinion.
Kinder und Jugendliche in den palästinensischen Gebieten erlernen nur selten die notwendigen Fähigkeiten, um in den weiterführenden Schulklassen oder im Berufsleben erfolgreich zu sein. Das Leseverständnis sowie die Schreib- und Ausdrucksfähigkeiten sind oft mangelhaft und es fehlt an der Fähigkeit, eigenständig zu lernen. Save the Children setzt sich mit dem Projekt dafür ein, dass Kinder ihr Recht auf Bildung in besser wahrnehmen können.
Das Ziel der verbesserten Bildungsqualität durch die Verbreitung partizipativer Lernmethoden an palästinensischen Schulen soll durch eine Reihe von Aktivitäten, die auf einem kinderrechtlichen Ansatz basieren, erreicht werden. Im Rahmen des Projekts werden 40 Schulen und 40 Bibliotheken darin unterstützt, Kindern ein sicheres und kreatives Lern- und Lebensumfeld bereitzustellen. Die Lehrerinnen und Lehrer sowie die Bibliothekarinnen und Bibliothekare erhalten Schulungen, in denen sie die Anwendung partizipativer Lernmethoden und innovativer pädagogischer Konzepte im Schulunterricht und in der Bildungsarbeit mit Kindern erlernen.
