Global Estimates  of Modern Slavery

The new Global Estimates presented in this report indicate that more than 40 million people were caught up in the grip of modern slavery in 2016. This alarming figure is a wake-up call to the global community, which, through the adoption of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), has committed to the target of ending modern slavery and human trafficking by the year 2030. The report charts how far we must still travel to honour our commitment to ending modern slavery by 2030. Part 1 presents the most complete possible profile of modern slavery in today’s world: the main forms of forced labour and forced marriage, their extent and characteristics, the means by which persons are trapped in them, and the duration of the abuse. Part 2 discusses key policy priorities emerging from the Global Estimates in the drive to rid the world of modern slavery. (...)
