Preventing and Eliminating All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls: The Role of National Human Rights Institutions

The present report shows the multitude of activities which NHRIs pursue in order to address gender-based violence against women. The examples and case studies showcase the dif-ferent strategies used to reach victims and protect women from gender-based violence. These strategies help women to understand and assert their rights and support them through judi-cial and non-judicial mechanisms, thereby contrib-uting to their empowerment. The work of NHRIs in this respect can not only help states in fulfilling their obligations in order to realize the human rights of all women and girls and make sure that they live in a life without violence, but also to implement Goal 5 of the SDGs and thus to realize the aim of the SDGs to leave no one behind. As a consequence, the work of NHRIs on promoting and protecting women’s rights, particularly with regards to gen-der-based violence, is directly relevant to the re-view theme of CSW63.
